At Remember When Homecare, we understand that proper foot care is essential to maintaining overall health, especially for seniors and individuals living with diabetes. That’s why we’re excited to introduce our Advanced & Diabetic Foot Care Nursing Services, now available in your own home, in hospitals, and in care facilities. This service is designed to prevent complications, promote mobility, and enhance quality of life.

Why is Foot Care Important?

Foot care often goes overlooked, but for certain populations—such as seniors, individuals with diabetes, or those with chronic conditions—it is a crucial part of healthcare. Foot problems, if left untreated, can lead to severe complications like infections, ulcers, and even amputation in the most extreme cases.

For individuals with diabetes, foot care is especially important because of the increased risk of foot complications caused by poor circulation, nerve damage (diabetic neuropathy), and reduced ability to heal wounds. Approximately 25% of people with diabetes will develop foot ulcers, which are a leading cause of lower limb amputations (Diabetes Canada, 2020). Regular foot assessments and proper care can significantly reduce these risks. A study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal highlights that up to 85% of diabetes-related amputations are preceded by foot ulcers, which can often be prevented with early intervention and regular care (Canadian Medical Association Journal [CMAJ], 2021).

Seniors also face increased foot health concerns due to age-related changes such as thinner skin, poor circulation, and arthritis. These factors contribute to common foot issues like corns, calluses, and infections, which, if untreated, can limit mobility and independence. Foot care plays a vital role in preventing falls, which are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for seniors, accounting for more than 85% of such incidents (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2019). Regular foot care can help seniors maintain balance, mobility, and overall independence.

What Our Foot Care Services Can Offer

Our Advanced & Diabetic Foot Care Nursing Services provide comprehensive, personalized care wherever you are—at home, in a hospital, or in a long-term care facility. These services include:

Advanced Foot Care: From routine maintenance such as nail trimming, callus reduction, and foot skin care, to more specialized treatments for corns, fungal infections, and ingrown toenails, our skilled nurses are equipped to manage a wide range of foot health concerns.

Diabetic Foot Care: We offer thorough foot assessments and monitoring for those with diabetes, ensuring early detection and treatment of potential issues such as infections or ulcers. Our team is trained to provide wound care and offer education on diabetic foot health to help clients prevent serious complications (Diabetes Canada, 2020).

Personalized Treatment Plans: Every individual is unique, and so are their foot care needs. Our nurses develop tailored care plans that address specific conditions and health goals, whether it’s managing a chronic condition, post-operative foot care, or regular maintenance to prevent issues from arising.

In-Home and Facility Care: Whether you’re recovering in the hospital, residing in a care facility, or prefer to remain in the comfort of your own home, we bring our services directly to you, ensuring accessibility and convenience. This approach helps clients avoid the risks associated with travel and allows us to monitor their ongoing health in a familiar environment.

The Importance of Regular Foot Care for Clients with Diabetes

Managing diabetes goes far beyond blood sugar control; foot care is a critical part of the equation. Individuals with diabetes are more prone to nerve damage, reduced blood flow, and slow healing, making them susceptible to foot ulcers, infections, and, in severe cases, amputation. According to Diabetes Canada (2020), about 85% of amputations related to diabetes are preceded by foot ulcers, which could be avoided with early detection and proper care.

Our nursing team is highly skilled in assessing the health of diabetic feet and managing conditions before they become serious. Routine care includes monitoring the skin for any signs of irritation, trimming toenails to prevent ingrown nails, and providing wound care if necessary. We also provide valuable education on how clients can care for their feet between professional visits, such as proper footwear choices and daily foot inspections.

Foot Care for Seniors: Supporting Mobility and Independence

As individuals age, foot care becomes increasingly important to maintain mobility and prevent falls, a leading cause of injury among seniors. Research from the Public Health Agency of Canada (2019) shows that falls account for more than 85% of injury-related hospitalizations among seniors, and many of these falls can be linked to foot problems or improper footwear. By addressing these issues through routine foot care, we help seniors stay active and independent longer.

The Convenience of In-Home Advanced Foot Care Services

Foot care clinics can be hard to access, particularly for individuals with limited mobility, chronic conditions, or those living in rural areas. That’s why Remember When Homecare offers in-home foot care services, which bring expert nursing care to the client, eliminating the need for transportation and reducing the risk of exposure to infections in public settings. This convenient, client-centered approach ensures continuity of care in a familiar and comfortable environment.
